Did you know? The limiting factor of heating capacity is the capability of standard household plugs and circuits; not the electric fireplace or fireplace maker. Generating more heat requires more electricity than the plug and circuit can handle. You would blow a fuse. Standard forced air fireplaces all pretty much claim 400 sq ft heated.

Heater: Average – The heater with this unit has a power rating of 750 watts on low and 1500 watts. Best Choice does not make heating claims but most manufacturers state “supplemental heating for up to 400 square feet”. This heater is average for the class.

Flames: Above Average – The flame effects can be operated without the heat and have 5 levels of brightness. Most buyers were pleased with the realistic look.

Value: ✅ Excellent – This unit offers a great value. Few electric fireplaces offer this many features at such a LOW PRICE.

Quality: ⛔ Poor – Of the 62 reviews posted at the time of this post, 17 commented on damage, not working etc that is a whopping 27% buyers not happy. a poor showing. The star rating is 3.9, with virtually all dis-satisfaction on condition issues.

Summary:

The Best Choice Products fireplace has many of the features found on more expensive fireplaces. In fact, in terms of looks and features this fireplace is hard to distinguish from the more expensive Touchstone Onyx. The electric fireplace maker did a really good job in providing value for the price charged.

The let down is in terms of product quality, and the goods being damaged either before or during delivery. Customer satisfaction numbers reveal this. These fireplaces are big and bulky to have to repack and return them is a major hassle. In fact, a lot of buyers just except at the damaged goods for that reason.

The question you must answer for yourself is that if most things are equal are you willing to take a chance on a less expensive product with increased risk of damage.

If the risk of scratches and dents don’t bother you you will not find a better value in a 50 inch wall mount electric fireplace.

Value: Very Good– This unit is a low to mid-priced electric fireplace.

Quality: ✅ Excellent – The average star rating is 4.6, which indicates high perceived quality and satisfaction. Virtually all negative comments were about heating capacity, (unrealistic or uninformed buyers).

Summary:

This fireplace is available in two finishes – Black or Ivory . Though the images black the black appear bigger – they are the same fireplace in a different finish.

We have reviewed close to 50 electric fireplaces. It is only fair to tell you – we own the Onyx 80001 electric fireplace, and love it. For us, it provides the perfect blend of features, quality, reliability at an attractive price point. We actually bought this during Amazon “prime days” which saved us 20% making it a no-brainer. It is perfect in the bedroom above the dresser.

The flame effects, heating capacity, remote control, are all very good or better. This fireplace is the perfect blend of features, benefits, and most importantly, quality at a very fair price. ✅ This is a definite ‘BUY’ recommendation. We did.

A lot of the comments were positive about the look of the fireplace. It has classic clean lines which will go with most decor. People also said that their visitors commented positively about the fireplace.

Quite a number of customers remarked on how easy the fireplace was to install and that the instructions for this were very clear. Most said that it was easy to mount on their wall and they were able to do this without any problems. 1. Mount the included bracket on the wall. 2. Attach firebox to bracket (It drops down into bracket). 3 Attach glass to firebox on the wall.

Another selling point for some was that the heat discharge is on the bottom of the unit. While this means it cannot be flush mounted into the wall it DOES mean you can safely mount a TV directly over it.

One thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was the astonishing number of buyers who received damaged goods. At the time of this review 25% complained. This is astonishing. There were some comments on poor customer service to correct these problems and they were impossible to get a hold of. We decided to test this out.

Customer Service: We called customer service on 2 occassions to ask some questions and test out allegations they were ‘impossible to get a hold of’. We got through both times (although the wait was 20 minutes on call 2). The rep answered our questions politely, and what he didn’t know – he found out on the spot. Customer help IS available.

If the customer service allegations were true, that coupled with a chance of getting damaged goods, would have led to a Do Not Buy recommendation.

There were multiple complaints of the heater shutting off after 1 minute. I just wonder if the buyers had set the timer incorrectly.

In regards to the amount of noise any given fireplace makes, if all is working correctly, it is a matter of individual tolerance. Some reports indicated there might be problems with the unit. But – in all fairness, it could be cranky customers.Save

The product description states the fireplace operates in 3 modes: flame display only, flame display with low heat, and flame display with high heat. This is a little misleading as it led us to believe the flame effects were just On/Off. Luckily this is NOT true.

In doing our Sherlock Holmes detective work we noticed in the close up up the controls, ( which are located on top of the firebox unit – AWKWARD,) there is a dimmer switch. Why would you have a dimmer switch if the flame effect was 1 level?

A call to customer service revealed there are actually, and I quote, ” 5 levels of flame brightness and intensity.”

After rechecking every word I found it mentioned in the info the product description. Oops, my bad. But I DID prove you could get through to customer service.

The flame effects are going for a realistic look. There is no fancy back-lighting or fancy colors. There were some positive comments on the nice flame effects. The flame effects can be switched on without the heater having to be turned on as well, so they can be used all year around.

The fireplace has a glass front that should never get hot so it is safe for pets and young children.

The heater with this unit has a power rating of 750 watts on low and 1500 watts. They do not provide BTU output, but based on our experience a ballpark figure would be 2500BTU on low and 5000 BTU on high. What does that mean? Though they do not make square foot claims, the output from the heater will realistically provide supplemental heat to a room up to 400 square feet.

The fireplace is designed to be plugged into a standard 120 volt electrical supply. There is no thermostat associated with the heater, just high and low heat options. A fan blows the heat out of the front face on the bottom. It will certainly make most rooms feel cozy. There is a timer can be set between 30 minutes to 7.5 hours.

We believe it is very important that everyone purchasing an electric fireplace heater be aware of the limitations of these units. With very rare exceptions and this electric fireplace heater is no exception, an electric fireplace heater is best thought of as a supplemental heat source. Or part of a comprehensive zone heating plan. Quite simply they will not heat your whole house.

The manual controls are located on the firebox on top. This is awkward. How awkward depends on how high on the wall you have mounted it. You have to reach up over or around the glass to see and get to them.

Controls include turning the fireplace either on or off, adjusting the intensity of the flame effects, turning the heat to the low or high position or no heat and the timer button for choosing the time that you want the heater to switch off.

This wall hung electric fireplace has most of the standard features people expect – an average heater and decent to good flame effects. The real selling point for a lot of people will be the bargain price.

Does that price mean one gives up quality? We have never reviewed a fireplace with more complaints about damage and the fireplace not working correctly out of the box. Maybe it was poor quality control when the product was launched or poor packing. Hopefully these issues are resolved. Returning a fireplace is not as easy as taking a shirt back to the store. Many elected just to cope with scratches, nicks and dents rather than going through the hassle of returning it.

Remember also that 3 out of 4 buyers who left reviews had no issues. Only you an decide if this is right for you. In good working order it is a fine value.

When you turn on the flame effects you will get different combinations of flame colors which are orange and blue and the two colors combined. They are going for a realistically colored flame effect, rather than fancy designer colors.

There are two intensity settings for the flames which are low and high. The flame effects can be switched on without the heater having to be turned on as well, so they can be used all year around.

There are glass white pebbles at the bottom of the fire which adds another dimension to the fire effect. on a fireplace set up rather than having the traditional burning logs and it. You have the ability to change the pebbles, or media in the bottom of the fireplace to whatever you like. This enhances the design versatility of the fireplace and can produce dramatically different effects depending on the colored of the glass or pebbles.

The fireplace has a glass front that should never get hot so it is safe for pets and young children. There is a projector screen with the fireplace and a spinning flame rod that uses long life LED’s to create the flame effects.

The heater with this unit has a power output of 2560 BTU’s at 750 watts and 5200 BTU’s at 1500 watts. The fireplace is designed to be plugged into a standard 120 volt electrical supply. There is no thermostat associated with the heater, just high and low heat options. A fan blows the heat out of the front face towards the top. The fan is pretty silent when it is operating.

Helpful Tip: Since this is a front discharge heater, it CAN be recessed into a wall for a flush mount or recessed mount. If you are mounting a TV over it allow for about 18″ clearance. Heat rises and you don’t want to directly heat your TV up.

The output from the heater is designed to heat a room up to 400 square feet . It is really intended to supply supplemental heat, but it will certainly make most rooms feel cozy. There is a timer that can be used to turn off the heat after 30 minutes or in 30 minute intervals up to 7.5 hours.

We believe it is very important that everyone purchasing an electric fireplace heater be aware of the limitations of of standard electric fireplace. With very rare exceptions and this electric fireplace heater is no exception, an electric fireplace heater is best thought of as a supplemental heat source. It can be part of a comprehensive zone heating plan. Quite simply they will not heat your whole house.

The limiting factor of heating capacity is the capability of standard household plugs and circuits; not the electric fireplace. Generating more heat requires more electricity than the plug and circuit can handle.

After some thought, we decided our criteria for presenting small electric fireplaces would be those that can fit into a smaller space. How small a small?

Since 95% of fireplaces are rectangular and meant to be hung horizontally, we used 38 inches wide as the maximum with criteria. A yard stick is 36″ inches long to give you some perspective

These fireplaces are small enough to fit almost anywhere where you might hang a picture. The bonus is they have very nice flame effects and can provide supplemental heat to your room. A picture just hangs there.

We also included some vertical electric fireplaces that fit into narrower spaces but still provide a good aesthetic look. They are so uncommon most people don’t even know that they exist. But they do have a small niche to fill – maybe yours?

Our intention in this post was not to conduct full in-depth reviews of each fireplace, but rather to point out examples of the category.

Of course we noted any important information on each fireplace.

Helpful Tip: The dimensions we give are the outside dimensions. Since you are probably looking to fit a smaller space. Often the viewing area is much smaller – look closely at the width of the border surrounding the viewing area. Wider border size = smaller viewing area.

Every now and then we get to review an electric fireplace that has multiple flame effect and lighting modes. This is one of them. This fireplace has flame effects that are extremely adjustable in terms of brightness and color. There is also dramatic side lighting for even more effect.

The flame effects with this fireplace look awesome and they are powered using energy efficient LED lights that will last for a long time so you don’t need to worry about changing them. ClassicFlame have included their Spectrafire™ technology with this unit, and with this you can have a traditional flame effect or introduce amber and blue flames with 3 different brightness settings.

The firebox also features LED side lights and up lights which really add to the fire effect. There are five color options with these lights and there are five settings, the first is lighting off then there is blue, amber, blue and amber and a color cycling mode. You can have the flame effects switched on without the heater so they can be enjoyed every day of the year.

Another fantastic feature is that you can change the media in the fire bed fire bed between, stones, glass or logs in whatever colors you want.

This fireplace has an infrared heater. The heat comes out of the front top of the unit in a downward direction . There are three infrared quartz elements that are designed to provide supplemental heat to a room up to 1000 square feet. Being an infrared heater means that the air will remain moist and not dried out so you will be comfortable with the heat output. Infrared heat is different than regular heat production click here for the infrared differences.

The wall mount electric fireplace space heater is powered by plugging it in to a standard 120 volt electrical socket. There is a thermostat for controlling the heat output and this heater will deliver 5200 BTU’s at 1500 watts. The thermostat can be set to deliver a heat range of between 62°F and 82°F or it can be set to be always on. Infrared heater electric fireplaces can generally war a larger area (up to 1,000 sq ft ) vs conventional electric fireplaces (400 sq ft.)

“Heat output is pretty minimal” – there were a handful of customers who were not impressed by the heat output of this fireplace. One said that there was hardly any heat at all and another that it would not heat a big room. There could have been a problem with the fireplace that produced little heat and this should have been returned. It is designed for supplemental heat and most of the customers were happy with the heat output so this is not a major issue.“The fireplace was damaged when it arrived” – one person experienced damage to the unit when it was received. This can happen when delicate units are shipped and the fireplace can be returned for a new one. that’s the beauty of shopping with Amazon.

Why would you consider a ‘good’ electric fireplace when we are offering a ‘better’ and the best? Well, the primary reason is that this is in fact, a good fireplace. There are a host of fireplaces that did not make our top three list that were not so good. The difference between our ‘good’ and ‘better’ is really a point of personal preference.

The flame effects of the Valencia are pretty realistic. The flame intensities can be dimmed or brightened using either the manual control on the fireplace or with a fully functional remote control. The flames were designed to a realistic orange and yellow so there are no fancy colors.

Take a look at the video below of the fireplace actually operating and judge for yourself. Unfortunately, the still pictures available of this fireplace aren’t so great, it looks better in action.

The heating capacity is standard (up to 400 square feet) for electric fireplaces in this class. In general, the Valencia electric fireplace has a nice, realistic flame effect capable of generating a calm soothing mood in any room.

Our better of the three fireplaces is the Onyx Black (also available as Ivory White), 50 inch touchstone wall-mounted electric fireplace. This is one of the first wall-mounted fireplaces we reviewed and it is still a standard which we use for comparison of others.

It is been an Amazon bestseller for a long time with very good reason. It does its job really, really well. It creates a cozy ambience and soothing effect, with great flame effects, while providing a little extra heat if needed.

The flame effects are outstanding. In fact we went through over 60 reviews and not a single person complained about “fake looking” flame effects. That is pretty the outstanding.

As noted previously, it comes in two colors black or white. This electric fireplace heater has clean modern lines. It is very fashion forward and will be a welcome focal point in almost any decor.

You might be wondering why we didn’t give this a “best” rating. The answer is that the Dimplex employs newer 3D technology and is really state-of-the-art. But, in seeking the best of anything, you certainly pay a premium in terms of price with the Dimplex.

That tech employed in this fireplace create superior flame effects. However, the new 3-D technology comes at a price.

The Dimplex Synergy Linear BLF50 features a patented flame technology and a beautiful glass ember bed. The flames arise from the media provided rather than simulating burning logs. This creates a very modern, contemporary and alluring look. The glass ember bed media can be changed to suit different tastes and décor. In a word the flame effects are spectacular. The 3 dimensional look of the flames and it makes all the difference in the world and sets this electric fireplace above the others by a distinct notch..

There are three installation options: 1. wall-mount – easily hanging it on the wall, 2. fully-recessed into new construction or 3. retrofit, partial recessed into existing 2×4 wall. The latter 2 give the fireplace a very custom built in look. . The latter 2 options require being handy with basic carpentry. Not all wall mount fireplaces can be flush mounted due to their heat discharge system.

Buyers simply love this wall hung electric fireplace. It is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of the 3 fireplaces we are taking a look at. Oh, one thing – Rolls Royces are expensive. If a more reasonable budget is your primary concern you may want to consider the Onyx or Valencia, our other 2 options.
