Here is our regal portable electric fireplace review. The Regal model # EF-FS2213B is a compact, free standing, portable, electric fireplace and is the best selling available small fireplace in its class.
Its compact size and relative light weight make it truly ‘plug and play’. Just plug it in to any standard outlet. You will be bringing warmth and a cozy atmosphere along with you to any room in the house.
Why is this fireplace heater a bestseller? It combines classic form, exceptional flame effects and good heat output. This combination is generally only found in more expensive, larger units. It ticks almost all of the boxes for many people at a reasonable price. Its compact design and relatively light weight allow it to easily be moved from room to room as needed.
This fireplace also has some fashion forward finishes and fairly unique design elements. The fireplace has an overall matte black finish with a few chrome accent elements. The body and mesh in the swinging door is metal. The legs, bottom and top as well as door frames are plastic.
It has an overall curved front and wire mesh door so it appears right at home flush against a wall, or angled in a corner. Ok, now that we have whetted your appetite, let’s dig in and get to the heart of the matter. It’s all in the details.

Regal Fireplace Flame Effects
Does this fireplace provide hypnotic quality flames or cheesy FX? Is this a beauty or a beast?
Many owners state they were ‘pleasantly surprised’ and rated the flame effects as ‘excellent’. If you are looking for a pleasant, cozy soothing focal point, this puppy does the trick for many. With the mesh door closed, the already good flame effects are enhanced. There is an extra degree of realism, a 3D effect on the depth as the flames seem to dance behind the mesh doors. Check it out for yourself, have a look at the 2:19 video that shows unpacking, set up and flame effects in light and in the dark:
With the door open, or partially open, a bit more light shows through. The unique feature of opening the door fully or partially can also add visual interest to the ambiance.
This portable electric fireplace uses 2 incandescent candelabra style 40 watt light bulbs and a rotating drum in front of the light to drive the flame effects. You can also increase or decrease the wattage of the bulbs a level up or down to shift the range of flame effects making them slightly dimmer or brighter to the eye.The bulbs are easily accessible through the back panel when they need replacement. Depending on frequency and length of use the bulbs should last 1-3 years.
It is not necessary to have the heater on at the same time as the flame effects. You can operate the fireplace without the heat function and just enjoy the visual effects alone.
So, we are looking good. We will tackle the next big question…will it keep you warm at night?

If you are not familiar with electric fireplaces, the heating function is generally thought of as being supplemental to your main heat source. In other words this unit will not heat an entire house in the dead of winter. It does do a nice job of raising the temperature in a given room. If you are looking for a dedicated heater, you might want to check out infrared space heaters. The general feeling among owners is that the heater does a pretty good job.
When evaluating the heating function of any electric fireplace it is critical to know where and how the heat emerges from the unit. This often overlooked piece of information can affect the effective heating function within your particular room and safe placement of the unit. You must also think of adjacent items and materials being negatively affected by heat.
This fireplace has the heating unit suspended under the unit and the hot air comes straight out the front. A blower fan pushes the heat out and is controlled by its own heater control that is a twist dial similar to one on a kitchen range. Aesthetically it does not look too pleasing but in terms of function I think the front discharge of the heater is the best set up.
Another factor that is important to a lot of people is the noise factor of the heating unit itself turning off and on and the noise level of the blower once it is on. What is an acceptable level of noise is a very individual thing. One owner said that the noise was ‘a light hum’. Another owner said to ‘think of a desktop computer fan straining a bit’. Placement in the room in relationship to where you are hanging out is a factor too. More distance, less noise.
The heating performance of the Regal fireplace falls in line with the operating parameters of many electric fireplaces. On the high setting it draws 1500 watts and will provide heat for up to a 400 square feet room, which is a room about 20 feet by 20 feet with an 8 foot ceiling.
The controls for the fireplace are fairly basic and straight forward. The older models were supplied by the manufacturer with a remote whose only function was to turn the unit on or off. It could not adjust the flame or heat. The remote is no longer available on the newer model. However, we have a really cool work around – see the accessory section.
There are 3 controls that are located on the bottom of the unit behind the door, not visible when the door is closed. Be prepared to be bending to the floor to access the controls and make adjustments. The flame adjustment knob, as you can see in the picture is farthest to the left and is a rotary dial. This allows many gradient settings between low and high. As you twist the knob the flame intensity gradually increases.
In the middle is the temperature control which allows you to dial in your temperature with a twist of the wrist. It is not just a high/low setting; there are variables in between like adjusting flame on a gas stove. There is a thermostat control so the unit will turn the heater off and on to maintain your dial setting. You cannot set it for a specific temperature, say 74 degrees. The unit will turn on and off more frequently the farther the dial is twisted until at the highest setting it will stay on.
The last control is a simple toggle On/Off switch. The cord is 2 meters in length, a shade over 6 feet long .The plug is not a flush mount plug so it will sit off the wall a couple of inches if the plug is directly behind it.
The Regal 22 does not get hot to the touch. This is a huge concern if you have children or pets. One owner noted that the wire mesh door prevented his playful and inquisitive cat from swatting and pawing at the interior of the unit.
The unit does not have an automatic safety shut off switch or built in overheat protection. One safety warning I feel compelled to mention is the use of extension cords. A cheap $1.98 cord is insufficient. If you must use one, make sure it is heavy gauge.
Although the unit can plug into any standard out let, be careful of plugging it in with other appliances on the same plug. Don’t use adapters and have 4 or five items running off the same outlet or you will probably pop a breaker or blow a fuse. Here is a comprehensive safety tip list.
What Is The Set Up Like?
Are you bracing yourself for those dreaded words ‘some assembly required?’ Well the answer is yes there is just a little assembly involving the attachment of legs of the unit. There are 2 screws for each leg that must be screwed in to attach the 4 legs. So…the total assembly is screwing in 8 screws.
Tools Needed: a Phillips head screwdriver or a power drill with a Phillips head bit.
Assembly Time: 5 minutes
Cost Of Operation
The simple, approximate answer is that it costs about 1 cent per hour to operate on flame only and 18 cents per hour with flame and heat. Those numbers are based on using the current (at time of this writing) nationwide average cost of electricity 12.5 cents per kilowatt hour.
What does that look like in terms of a hit to your wallet?
If you use your fireplace every night for 6 hours every day, in a month in flame only mode expect to add only $1.80 to your electric bill. This is a bargain for a month’s ambiance and coziness.
If you use your fireplace every night for 6 hours every day in a month in heat and flame mode expect a jump in your electric bill of $33.75. This is a bigger hit, but if it allows you to lower your thermostat, it could be a big money saver.

Dimensions Of The Heater
The fireplace weighs 23 lbs. The light weight and simply being able to plug in make it portable from room to room.
There are 2 accessories you may want to consider, the first for added functionality, the second for added aesthetics and pleasure.
1. Consider an outlet timer. For about $10 you can get a timer that plugs into the wall outlet. The fireplace cord plugs into the timer. You now have the ability to set the on/off function to run automatically, you can preheat your room or set the unit to turn off after you fall asleep. Check out the Outlet Timer
2. Add fire crackle sound. The sound effect of fire crackling is only available on very high end fireplaces, but we have you covered. For about $30 you can add this sound machine, The box is about 2 1/2 ” x 3″ and can attach to the fireplace out of sight. Check out the Fire Crackler Sound System
Pros and Cons of the Regal Fireplace:
• The flame and fire effects look great, they compare well to more expensive units.
• Though compact in design and stance the amount of front discharged forced heat compares favorably with larger units.
• The styling is very appealing traditional and the functioning mesh door is a plus.
• Packaging good and unit was double boxed (this may be a response to ‘con’ #1 below).
• It is portable and easily moved from location to location.
• Several buyers complained of excessive noise upon first start up described as a ‘rattle loud enough to be annoying’ and ‘the most obnoxious sound ever’. This is usually the result of the rotating flame mechanism being knocked out of place. Quick fix – remove the back panel and re-insert it.
• One buyer complained that if you set the heat control at ½ or ¾ the unit will kick off and then cycle back on rapidly after about 30 seconds this could be annoying.
• Price is somewhat high compared to other units
There are over 50 consumer reviews on Amazon alone and the vast majority of ratings are the highest. Although there are some buyers who knocked a few stars off their ratings, when I looked carefully the dings were not from product quality or performance gripes. They were from shipping problems either taking a while to arrive or the merchandise was damaged during shipping. I believe the latter was corrected when they started double boxing the unit. One of the many great benefits to shopping on Amazon, is prompt, no questions asked returns.
I think that once you adjust for those low reviews generated by shipping the vast majority of buyers were very pleased with their purchase and the reviews accurately give a big thumbs up.

Price – Is It Fair?
This unit is generally available for under $200 (as of this writing). That is a fair discounted price compared to similar units in the class. f you see a larger discount it becomes an even better deal. For the nice flame effect and design, the price is right. Although there are some slightly less expensive units in the class be careful of what your tradeoffs are. Some less expensive units have truly cheesy looking flame effects.

To summarize the Regal e-Flame USA 22″ Portable Electric Fireplace:
This is currently the best seller in the portable fireplace category on Amazon. A lot of people are seeing value combined with function. This fireplace fills a unique niche in the array of electric fireplaces available today. It is free standing, yet portable and because of its diminutive size space can be found for it in just about any room. I personally like the styling cue of having the fire viewed through a mesh door. I provided several pictures so you can make up your own mind about styling.
The flame effect is really good for a fireplace in this price range. Incrementally more realistic flames come at a steep cost with the best flame effects being in units over $1,000. It is compact in design yet heats what is almost an electric fireplace standard of 400 square feet.
Who will be LESS THAN satisfied with this fireplace?
This is not a grand focal piece for your home in the way wall mounts or free standing fireplaces with a mantle surround are. It is small. If you are looking for a primary heat source for your whole home this will fall short. In an open concept living/dining/kitchen area the heat effect will be slight at best.
Who will be MORE THAN satisfied with this fireplace?
If your focus is on a cozy atmosphere focal point and the styling appeals to you grab this unit. It is a good combination of value and function. It is an accessory to your room, a really nice add on and functions well for its intended purpose. The heat is enough to warm up a cold bedroom or problem area in your home.
The final unequivocal verdict is that if you are looking for a great looking portable, free standing electric fireplace you will not do better. Buy this fireplace. Thanks for reading our Regal portable electric fireplace review.
